713 Music Hall originally opened in 1965 as the Houston Music Hall. Over several decades, Houston Music Hall created a name for itself in the Houston scene for hosting stars like Elvis Presley and Whitney Houston. In its earlier years, the venue was famous for attracting classical music performers, orchestras, ballet troupes, and operas.

Houston Music Hall became the go-to destination for intimate, high-quality events because of its astounding acoustics and quaint atmosphere. Eventually, the venue gained so much popularity that musicians of all genres chose the iconic stage for their tour legs in Houston. By 2009, the venue name changed to 713 Music Hall, giving an ode to the roots and area code of Houston, TX.

At the same time, the music hall underwent major renovations to revamp its facilities, lighting, seating, and sound system so guests could enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience. The Office for Metropolitan Architecture designed 713 Music Hall to feel more like a small music club where you’d see underground artists on tour, despite its relatively large capacity for bigger events.

The Music Hall’s Historic Transformation

The story of 713 Music Hall mirrors Houston’s own evolution as a city of innovation and reinvention. The building began life in 1934 as a train depot adjacent to Grand Central Station. From there, developers decided it would serve the location better as the U.S. Postal Service headquarters, officially opening to the public in 1961. 

By the mid-1980s, the venue was renamed the Barbara Jordan Post Office, honoring the influential Texas congresswoman. However, times changed quickly in Houston, and just decades later, the structure was reimagined by OMA New York. 

All About the Architectural Innovation

Architect Jason Long oversaw its final transformation into the modern concert venue you see today. The newly designed facility, which opened in November 2021, preserves key historic elements. However, introducing sleek, functional aesthetics suitable for 21st-century performances has taken it to the next level as an entertainment hub.

Now operating as 713 Music Hall, the building’s architecture reflects a seamless blend of creativity and Houston’s industrial heritage. Some of the notable elements that architecture buffs appreciate include its flexible multi-level design. The 90,000 square feet of adaptable event space accommodates up to 5,000 guests for big concerts.

Angled viewing layouts ensure unobstructed sightlines and an intimate concert experience from nearly any vantage point. However, the layout hasn’t eroded the rich history evident in the aesthetics, such as the original paint, postal signage, and the unique “spy tunnels” once used by USPS supervisors. Symbolic materials also extend to aluminized fabric heat shields in the lobby, a nod to NASA and Houston’s space legacy, and stainless-steel grids supported by cattle fence insulators, a reference to Texas’s ranching roots.

The New Facility’s Opening and Continuous Evolution

Originally branded as The Terminal, the venue reintroduced itself as 713 Music Hall upon opening in November 2021.
